We made marks and shared stories of our place. Earlier this month, I had the privilege of connecting with people at the Black Mountain Tailgate Market with the Regrounding Map.
The collective trauma and grief of experiencing Hurricane Helene, requires collective healing to honor and bear witness to our community. About 100 people stopped, marked where they were, and mapped their memories of September 27, 2024. A lovely element of this engagement is hearing people share with each other:
Oh, you showered at that temporary shower place, I did too! The third stall was the best/hottest.
Our home was the coffee and communication hub after the storm. We live on the North Fork and we were stuck, so the whole neighborhood came together to help each other.
My home flooded.
My school flooded.
With each exchange, we connected. With each hug, we healed.
